Al Roker Shares His ‘Great Breakfast Sandwich’ Idea

Al Roker is turning breakfast on its head!

The meteorologist offered some of his culinary expertise during the 3rd Hour of the Today Show yesterday, Aug. 15, but his colleagues weren't all convinced.

“You know what’s a great breakfast sandwich?” Roker asked Shenielle Jones and Dylan Dreyer after spotting NBC News correspondent Jesse Kirsch holding a Dunkin' treat. “A couple of glazed doughnuts with a fried egg and some bacon.”

“Is that a thing?” Jones asked in shock, with Dreyer jumping in with a simple, “No!”

Roker wasn't one to back down, though, emphasizing the merits of a sweet and savory combination.

“I’m making it a thing! Sweet, salty — kind of like a McGriddle!” he pointed out.

Dryer conceded that the flavor combination made sense. "...but that’s kind of a lot,” she continued. “I can’t remember the last time I had fast food.”

Today.com food writer Joseph Lamour suggested cutting the sugar content a little by slicing a donut in half as the bun, bringing the ratio more into balance. He also prefers to add American cheese and swap out the bacon for sausage.

Lamour also pointed out that, as excited as he was, Roker did not, in fact, come up with the idea. In 2013, the TV personality tried out Dunkin's Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich, featuring bacon and a pepper-fried egg on a glazed doughnut.

“I think it’s got potential,” Roker said at the time. He may have forgotten in the last decade, but something about the concept clearly lingered in his subconscious!
