For the past few days, Today star Al Roker has been either absent from the NBC show or calling in from his house while wearing a sling. In case some viewers are wondering why, it's because Al recently underwent surgery for his right shoulder.

On August 12, Al had total shoulder replacement surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, according to Today.com. This marked his second shoulder operation in six years (in 2014, he had to have the rotator cuff in his left shoulder repaired).

As for his right shoulder, Al decided it was time to take action after experiencing "intense pain" from arthritis that kept him up at night.

"For the last month, I've only been sleeping about two or three hours a night, which even for me is a little bit less," he explained.

Following the procedure, Al posted an Instagram update from his hospital bed. He explained that the surgery went well and thanked his fans for all of their "good wishes and prayers."

"Now comes the hard part of doing all the physical therapy, but that won't start until Monday," Al remarked at the time.

How is Al Roker doing now after his shoulder surgery?

Lately, Al appears to be doing okay and is currently working on his physical therapy. Today.com reports that he's expected to be in a sling for three weeks and will continue with PT for about seven to 10 days.

Speaking with fellow Today third-hour co-hosts Sheinelle Jones, Craig Melvin, and Dylan Dreyer on Tuesday this week, Al gave fans yet another update on his road to recovery.

"I'm starting physical therapy tomorrow, this one's been a little bit tougher than doing the knee or the hip," Al said, referencing his 2016 knee replacement surgery and total hip replacement surgery last year. "But slowly but surely, we're coming back."
