Alicia Keys Opened the Grammys With a Touching Tribute to Kobe Bryant and His Daughter Gianna
Alicia Keys paid tribute to Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria Onore, who both passed away this morning in a helicopter accident.
Alicia opened the Grammys with Boys II Men and sang, "It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday."
While the Grammys are typically a celebratory occasion, it is incredibly difficult to proceed with business as usual amid the recent news that Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria Onore passed away this morning.
Many celebrities have showed an outpouring of love and support on social media and the red carpet, and Alicia Keys just gave a moving tribute to Kobe and Gianna as she opened the show.
After Lizzo performed, Alicia stepped onstage and said, "Earlier today, Los Angeles, America, and the whole wide world lost a hero. And we’re literally standing here heartbroken in the house [Staples Center] that Kobe Bryant built.”
And in a move that brought multiple people in the audience to tears, Alicia brought out Boys II Men and said, "We never imagined in a million years we’d have to start the show like this. So we wanted to do something that could describe, a tiny bit, how we all feel right now." Together, they all performed "It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" in honor of the victims of the crash.
