Alicia Silverstone Reveals Her Favorite Vegan Recipes
Food is the most important thing we choose every day: That's the mantra that Alicia Silverstone lives by. "That choice you make for breakfast, lunch, and dinner is so important for self-care," she tells GoodHousekeeping.com. "When you eat really well, you feel really well."
Between launching her new MyKind Organics supplements and working on upcoming film projects, the actress, author, and environmental activist recently stopped by the Good Housekeeping Institute in New York City to speak at our annual Raise the Green Bar Summit this fall.
Alicia shared that following a plant-based diet in her own life has changed not only how she parents - "When you don’t feel good, it's really hard to be patient and being a parent takes every little part of your being," she says - but how she presents herself overall.
"If I am eating well and sleeping well - cause eating well equals sleeping well - then I look great. My skin looks good, my face looks good, everything is in the right place," she shares. "I can see it from meal to meal on my face how food can either affect me and make me look best and feel best and how it can go either way."
And yes, she's made a business out of holistic healthy living, but she also walks the talk at home when she's cooking with her own 7-year-old son, Bear. "He's the taste tester," she says. "He’s like, 'It needs more lemon, Mommy!'"
Some of their favorite vegan recipes include:
Hummus with vegetables from their garden
Stir-fry with brown rice
Tacos with Bear's guacamole, chopped tomatoes, and "refried" pinto beans
Raw balls with cacao, almond, maple, a little salt, walnuts, and coconut
"It's really, really sweet to watch him prep his own food," she says. "I want him to love what he's eating and feel great about it."
But she still partakes in the occasional glass of wine or whiskey herself. Alicia knows that sticking to any eating plan involves treating yourself (bring on the vegan desserts!) - and that's okay in her book. The more important thing is just getting back to that base.
"Sometimes I don’t plan perfectly, but I try hard and know that when I do, everything is better," she says.
