Amal Clooney Did the Impossible By Convincing Me to Try This Divisive Shoe

She turned a hater into a fan.
Amal Clooney can convince me to wear anything. And that’s because she always looks like the personification of perfection. That hair! That skin! That smile! Those outfits! So it’s not like it’s hard for her to persuade me to try something new. In fact, she recently wore a pair of shoes that I wasn’t fond of until I saw her in them—I guess that’s the Clooney effect, and I guess I’ll have to try her divisive footwear while I still can.
Clooney has been busy serving up style in Italy (oh, how I wish I could go back there right now), but there’s no denying that this particular look is sunshine to a T, literally. The human rights lawyer stepped out in a bright-yellow minidress you can’t help but smile at—in fact, if you’re having a bad day, like I was, just look at it for a boost of serotonin.
But the lewk didn’t stop there. Clooney paired the sunny dress with a summery straw hat, sunglasses, and last but certainly not least, a pair of wedges—a shoe style I never thought I would even consider wearing, seeing I’m keen on kitten heels and more of the like. But, Clooney is a fan of the wedge (she’s worn them here, too!), so I guess it’s time I finally give them a try.

While I won’t give up on my kitten-heel slingbacks, a shoe I’ve waxed poetic about before, I do understand the appeal of a wedge, a.k.a., why Clooney seems to regularly slip into them. The style screams summer, especially when it's a raffia-rope sole that oozes beach ease (as is the case with her pair that she styled with an equally summery mini). But, the wedge doesn’t stop there—the heel iteration can be designed in cork, another Clooney-worn option, or a patent leather option, like these from Larroudé I’m eyeing for fall—and planning to wear with cute socks, too!
Though wedges certainly come with some controversy, as they might immediately draw to mind Jersey Shore or the prime of Y2K, their comfort and practicality is undeniable. So, push that hate aside and give them a try because if there’s one thing we’ve learned in 2024, it’s that shoes that give you foot pain are just not worth it (hence, the emergence of even more divisive styles that promise the height of a heel with the comfort of a sneaker). Wedges offer a balanced-out sole on which to walk, evenly distributing weight and giving your entire foot a break from having to stand on a single, 1-inch heel (scary!)
So, don’t think wedge season is over. Snag a pair now, wear them with minis à la Clooney while you can, and when it gets too cold, slip on socks and rock another controversial look: socks with sandals.
