Amazon Can Deliver Packages to Your Car Now
Amazon may have figured out a way to foil porch package thieves for good: deliver to the inside of your car. The company announced Tuesday it’s launched a new service that allows couriers to access the inside of your car to drop off packages.
The new feature, called Amazon Key In-Car, uses the previously launched Amazon Key service, which already allows packages to be delivered inside your home. If you want to try it, you can download the Amazon Key app and link your Amazon account to your car service account, like OnStar or Volvo On Call.
Once everything is linked, you can choose in-car delivery with an Amazon order, and then use the app to check if you’ve parked your car in the correct delivery location, which needs to be in a publicly accessible area. You can also set a backup location, like your home or office, if the driver can’t find your car.
The app gives you a four-hour delivery time window, tells you when the package is on its way, and when it’s been delivered. You can also check the app to see when your car was unlocked and then re-locked.
The Verge reports that Amazon has been testing this feature in California and Washington for the past six months. Take a look at Amazon’s video featuring early testers below:
Of course, there were mixed reviews about the idea on Twitter after the announcement came:
Yes, it can seem a little creepy to have a stranger unlock your car while you’re not there. But in their announcement, Amazon made it clear that security is an issue they know about. They’ve made sure to verify that the delivery drivers are in the right place with the right package before they can unlock your car, and drivers don’t get any special codes or keys. And there are certain restrictions to in-car delivery, like package size, weight, or monetary value.
You can use the service, which is available in 37 cities across the United States, if you have a compatible Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Volvo, or Cadillac, 2015 or newer, with an active OnStar or Volvo On Call account. Amazon Key In-Car doesn’t require any extra cost if you have a Prime membership.
