America Ferrera Will Direct an Adaptation of Erika L. Sanchez’s Novel

America Ferrera will be making her feature directorial debut with an adaptation of Erika L. Sanchez's novel "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter".

The project is in development at Amazon MGM Studios' Orion Pictures, with Linda Yvette Chávez set to pen the screenplay.

Following Julia Reyes, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter tells the story of a witty teen with big dreams about becoming a writer far away from her hometown of Chicago.

Doreen Wilcox Little, Charles D. King, Poppy Hanks, and David Kuhn will produce, with Greta Talia Fuentes executive producing.

Ferrera recently secured her first Oscar nomination for her role as Gloria in Greta Gerwig's blockbuster hit, Barbie. She has previously directed episodes of Superstore and Gentefield, both of which she also starred in.

Chávez and Ferrera have previously partnered on Gentefield, which Chávez wrote and Ferrera executive produced. The Netflix series follows The Morales cousins, who try to save their grandfather's taco shop while gentrification takes over their LA neighborhood.

Deadline first reported the news.
