Amy Schumer Explains Why She Dropped Out of the 'Barbie' Movie
Amy Schumer is getting candid about the real reason she decided not to move forward with the Barbie movie.
In case you didn't know, Schumer, 42, was initially set to play the lead of an earlier version of the upcoming film Barbie before she notably dropped out a few years back.
At the time, the comedic actress blamed "scheduling conflicts" as the reason for her departure—but now she has finally given us the full story.
In a new interview with Andy Cohen for an episode of Watch What Happens Live, Schumer was asked to share more about her decision to leave the movie, but before getting into the nitty-gritty, she joked, "They said I was too thin."
That's when the Trainwreck star began to get more serious. "I think we said it was scheduling conflicts. That’s what we said, but it really was just creative differences," she admitted.
"But there’s like a new team behind it and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool, so I will be seeing that movie," she clarified, prompting Cohen, 55, to ask, "Was it just that it didn’t feel feminist and cool when you were involved in it?"
"Yeah, yeah," she confirmed.
She also made a point to note her enthusiasm for the new upcoming film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, stating, "I can’t wait to see the movie, I think it looks awesome."
Back in 2016, before the new cast came onboard for the project, with the screenplay now being written by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, Schumer was set to star. At the time, it was based on an original idea and screenplay by Hilary Winston.
Less than a year later, Schumer exited the movie, telling Variety at the time, "The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen."
The highly-anticipated new Gerwig-directed Barbie film is set to release in theaters on July 21.
