Amy Schumer offered crucial parenting advice to pals Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Cera — and psst it’s a great reminder for all of us. The star of the new Hulu series Life & Beth recently told PEOPLE that she shared her insights with Cera, father to a 6-month-old baby, and Lawrence, who gave birth in 2022.

“It’s just about failing,” Schumer said. “It’s like stand up. You mess up so bad.” The comedian added that she has already set the gold star in failing when she named her son Gene Attell — which Schumer and husband Chris Fischer realized sounds exactly like genital.

“It couldn’t go much worse than [that],” she quipped. “But they’re doing great. They really are both just such clear, natural parents.”

Schumer, who is mom to two-year-old Gene, has been nothing but honest when it comes to the challenges of parenting, from her anatomical name mishap to larger insecurities. She appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers last year and got super candid about motherhood.

“I got some nice advice from Natalie Portman,” Schumer said. “She was like, ‘You have more instincts than you know you have.’ And what I’m finding is that Natalie Portman is a huge liar. Because, so far, my instincts are all dead wrong.”

One example? She’s been known to go against parenting books. “Usually, if Chris and I are gonna leave Gene with the nanny, we sneak out. We literally creep like a cartoon so he doesn’t cry and freak out,” she explained. “Page one of this book is literally like, ‘Whatever you do, don’t sneak out. That’s really bad for your child.'”

Still, the comedian holds onto an inspiring message throughout the strange, surreal journey of parenthood. “I call my friends from home for advice,” she said. “But my instincts are all really bad. They’re really poor. But you have to live and learn.”
