Amy Winehouse Estate Remembers Her 'True Friend' Tony Bennett Following His Death

The estate of Amy Winehouse, the soulful songstress who passed away in 2011, is remembering Tony Bennett after the news of his death.

A Twitter account representing the late "Tears Dry on Their Own" singer took to the social media platform with a loving tribute to the legendary music artist, along with a video of the two icons performing together.

"An incredible artist and a true friend to Amy. Rest in peace, Tony Bennett," the note opened. "Tony was always a source of inspiration to Amy, and their connection was made even more special when he was the one to announce Amy’s ‘Record of the Year’ GRAMMY Award in 2008."

In the snippet, the eternal voices of the two now-deceased artists filled the room as they belted out their duet tune, "Body and Soul," which would come to be Winehouse's final recording before her unfortunate July 23, 2011, death of alcohol poisoning at the age of 27. The single was then released worldwide posthumously on September 14, 2011, on what would have been her 28th birthday, and was featured on Bennett's album, Duets II: The Great Performances.

The Twitter account added an additional photo of the pair together, writing, "and then culminating in 2011 with the beautiful 'Body and Soul'; a gorgeous and sentimental duet with her personal hero. We send all our love and condolences to Tony’s family and friends."

It also added a personal quote of Amy's, encapsulating her sentiments from the occasion: “I wasn’t shocked because I won the GRAMMY, but because Tony Bennett has said my name!”

The emotional moment where the "Rags to Riches" crooner announced the "Back to Black" artist's Record of the Year win for "Rehab" at the award ceremony was one to remembered, as you can watch for yourself in the clip below.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of the album’s release, Bennett recalled the words he said to a nervous Winehouse before they made the song together that "changed" her whole life.

“She was very nervous to perform, but I said, ‘You know, it sounds like you’re influenced by Dinah Washington.’ And all of the sudden, her whole life changed,” he said at the time.

He continued: “She said, ‘How did you know that Dinah Washington is my goddess?’ She did some Dinah Washington licks, and from that moment on, she just relaxed. And it came out wonderful. She was like, ‘Tony understands me, you know?’”

Bennett also raved about the London-born singer's undeniable talent and what he "loved" about her, adding, “Some people think that anyone could sing jazz, but they can’t. It’s a gift of learning how to syncopate but it’s also a spirit that you’re either born with or you’re not. And Amy was born with that spirit.”

As Parade previously reported, Bennett died on Friday, July 21, 2023, just two weeks shy of his 97th birthday. Though an official cause of death has yet to be determined, his passing comes seven years after his diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease.
