Anchor Bar selling 60 cent wings for National Wing Day

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Whether you prefer spicy or sweet, drums or flats, the Anchor Bar in Amherst is saucing up 60 cent wings in honor of National Wing Day Monday.

Today also marks the anniversary of the creation of the Buffalo staple.

“It’s one of those things that you don’t really think about all the time because it’s such a big thing,” said Mike Mulé, General Manager of the Anchor Bar. “It’s all over the world, but it’s kind of impressive to think that it happened in our own backyard.”

The Anchor Bar says the story of the chicken wing all started right in the 716 when their owner, Teressa Bellissimo, was up late preparing soup.

“Maybe she was going to put them in the soup or discard them,” said Michelle Buchholz, Franchise Operations Director at the Anchor Bar. “But her son Dominic was tending bar that day and his friends came in and were hungry. It was late in the evening and he said, ‘mom, can you cook us something up?’ and she just looked at those wings and said, ‘I’ll put those wings in oil and I’m going to create a nice sauce for them’ and they were Italian and they came up with this nice, spicy sauce and sauced those wings up and we say the rest is history.”

They say that night the creation was served along with celery and blue cheese to cut the heat of the homemade sauce. Now, sixty years later, the trio continues to be served side by side.

Prices of wings have fluctuated since the pandemic and they’re seeing them back on the rise.

“[We] just want to give back to the community in a way,” said Buchholz. “And this is the day to do it, let them eat some chicken wings at a good price and save some money.”

With this deal, they’re expecting it to be one of the busiest days of the year.

On a typical Monday, they usually prepare around a thousand wings. Today, they’re preparing to make ten times that amount.

“Buffalonians know chicken wings really well,” said Mulé. “Everybody’s got their place and got their spot, we pride ourselves that we are part of that whole original invention of the wing and it’s fun to celebrate that.”

To be served the deal, you have to be a part of their rewards program. You can sign up beforehand or while you’re in the restaurant.

The deal only applies to the Amherst location. Their hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday.
