“Lift Every Voice and Sing” is considered the Black national anthem. Originally a poem penned by by civil rights leader James Weldon Johnson in 1899, it was later set to music by Johnson’s brother, John Rosamond Johnson.
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” has been included ahead of the Super Bowl since 2021. It was previously sung by Alicia Keys and “Abbott Elementary” star Sheryl Lee Ralph.
The Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the San Francisco 49ers at the 57th annual Super Bowl, held in Las Vegas. Usher will headline this year’s halftime show.
