Anne Hathaway says she's body-shamed 'all the time'
Anne Hathaway is opening up about the critical comments she receives about her body.
In April, the actress made headlines after she posted an Instagram notifying fans that she was putting on weight for a movie role. She also issued a message to would-be fat-shamers: “It’s not me, it’s you.”

Hathaway, who is now starring in Ocean’s 8, told Hoda Kotb during an interview on Today on Thursday that the defiant post was prompted by pressure she feels about her shape.
“It sounds kinda sad to say, I just wanted to be able to enjoy my summer and let everybody know that I’m living in my body and I’m happy with my body,” the 35-year-old star told Kotb. “And if my body is different than what you’re used to, or what you think it should be, that’s yours. And my experience is mine and I’m loving it.”
Hathaway, famed for her roles in The Devil Wears Prada and Les Misérables, added that she gets body-shaming comments “all the time.” She also spoke about reexamining the remarks about her weight that she received as a teen actress, explaining that they didn’t give her the most body-positive outlook at the time.
“One of my favorite things that’s happening in this moment is that a lot of us are looking at the language that we choose and we’re becoming more conscious about it,” she said. “So, maybe someone thought that it wasn’t a big deal to say to a 16-year-old … ‘Congratulations, you got the part. You can’t gain any more weight.’
“Maybe they thought that they were giving me some good advice, but now, 20 years later, I’m able to say, ‘I actually think that could have been done more consciously and more loving.’ It left me feeling confused. A lot of us are taking up this opportunity to become more conscious and more loving in the way that we communicate with each other. More compassionate, I guess.”
