Anti-Semitic and racist fliers are appearing on people's lawns in New Jersey
Some residents of Cherry Hill, N.J., were initially confused when they walked out of their homes to find fliers with anti-Semitic and racist language placed on their driveways. But that soon turned into worry over the anonymous hate crime incident, which affected dozens of residents in their community.
Neighbors began to find fliers in ziplock bags weighed down by rice on their lawns and driveways Saturday morning, each containing hateful literature with a host of offensive language. Some even contained photos of Hitler or the emblem of the Ku Klux Klan. According to resident Ken Weidenfeld, who spoke with WPVI in Philadelphia, the notes are evidently catching people off-guard.
“I started reading it and it was about Jews, and it had KKK right at the bottom. There’s a phone number on it,” he said. “I don’t know if they know I’m Jewish or not, or if they just randomly put it there.”
Other members of the community have expressed their concern over the “horrifying” nature of the messages, especially considering how integrated they feel these neighborhoods are. Cherry Hill police officers have collected the fliers from about 30 residences. They are still searching for whoever is responsible for distributing the fliers sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning.
“We understand people have a right to free speech, but this type of behavior, coming in the dark of night and throwing these on people’s lawns, is cowardly,” police Chief William Monaghan told the news outlet, while Congressman Donald Norcross posted a message on Facebook about the incidents.
“?I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again,” Norcross wrote, “hate, violence & racism have no place in our communities or country.?”
