'The Crown's' New Prince Philip Is...
Deadline confirms Netflix's seasons three and four will feature Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip. Menzies, who's long starred on Outlander, is taking over the role from Matt Smith.
Menzies has a history of playing royals of sorts, Deadline notes: besides Outlander (where he plays both Frank and Black Jack Randall), he's starred as Brutus in HBO’s Rome, Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones, and the Duke of Cornwall in the BBC's forthcoming King Lear.
Per Entertainment Weekly, the next season of The Crown is jumping into the 1970s from the 1960s, where season two left off. Also starring in the upcoming seasons are Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret (played by Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby respectively in the first two seasons).
There will undoubtedly be discussions around Menzies's compensation for the role as production for the new season begins. The internet panicked upon learning Matt Smith was paid more than Claire Foy (...who played THE CROWN on their show THE CROWN) during their time on the show.
When asked recently about the pay disparity, show producer Suzanne Mackie said: "Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen.”
The new season is set to begin filming this summer.
