The Grey's Anatomy season 15 premiere kicked off last night with a bang - and a new "Ortho God" in the form of Dr. Atticus "Link" Lincoln, played by Nashville's Chris Carmack. But fans of the long-running series couldn't help but pine over a different doctor.

Derek Shepherd, although long gone from Grey Sloan, still played a part in the most recent episode. In an emotional moment, Meredith finally put the last memento of her late husband to rest when she scrubbed up in a purple cap - and not the ferryboat one worn by McDreamy.

A few fans appreciated this sign that Meredith hoped to move forward with her life, especially after those intense dream scenes. Actor Giacomo Gianniotti (who plays Andrew DeLuca) has also hinted to ET that some romance might develop between DeLuca and Mer in the future besides that drunken kiss last season, and there's definitely something heating up with Link.

But most viewers felt heartbroken by the sudden change, arguing that she didn't have to give up on every piece of Derek and that the cap paid an important tribute. After all, they did have three kids together!

However, as one keen-eyed fan pointed out, Meredith did technically put away the ferryboat cap in the season 14 finale, so this move shouldn't have come as a surprise.

We still won't fault you for missing McDreamy though as there's no replacing Patrick Dempsey. Catch the next episode of Grey's Anatomy on Thursday, October 4, at 8 p.m. on ABC, with streaming available on Hulu.
