Here's When Princess Charlotte Will Take Over As 'Princess Royal'
As if being a princess isn't boujee enough, an even more coveted title exists in the royal world, and Princess Charlotte is on her way to inheriting the dignified moniker.
"Princess Royal" is a title reserved for the eldest daughter of the monarch, but Princess Charlotte hasn't earned the appellation quite yet. When Charlotte's father, Prince William takes over the throne, Princess Charlotte will be the eldest daughter of the monarch. But while Queen Elizabeth is still seated at the throne, Princess Anne-the Queen's only and therefore eldest daughter-takes ownership of the role.
"It is a title that remains for life, so Princess Charlotte will have to wait at least until the death of the current Princess Royal," royal expert Duncan Larcomb explained to Town and Country. But given the responsibilities associated with being the Princess Royal, Princess William and Kate Middleton might choose to wait until Princess Charlotte is older-much older-before bestowing her as Princess Royal.
"Princess Anne had to wait until 1987 before her mother the Queen bestowed the title of Princess Royal on her, even though the title had been vacant since 1965," Larcomb continued to T&C, adding that when the position does become available, Princess Charlotte might not be so eager to accept.
"Under ancient British law, any man who sleeps with the Princess Royal before they are married is guilty of high treason-punishable by execution!" Larcombe says, joking that, "Perhaps Princess Charlotte’s future boyfriends had better look out. At the very least, Will and Kate are likely to wait until after Charlotte marries before giving her the title."
