Here's the Real Meaning Behind the Royal Baby's Official Name
Hear ye, hear ye: The third royal baby of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge finally has a name, and it’s the super-regal-sounding Prince Louis Arthur Charles! Here’s the meaning behind it.
Louis (pronounced LOO-ee with a silent S, not the Americanized LOO-iss), which had us sorta confused because it’s the most French name in a long line of English royal names, means renowned warrior. It’s also in his dad’s name (Prince William’s full name is Prince William Arthur Philip Louis) and his older brother’s (Prince George Alexander Louis), and it’s probably also a nod to Prince Philip’s fave uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten.
Arthur means bear and is also a family name (with Louis’s father and grandfather both holding the middle name Arthur).
And finally, Charles, which means free man, is a clear reference to Prince William’s dad, Prince Charles, aka the next king of England (but more important, granddad to a third bundle of royal joy).
So, that’s “free renowned warrior bear” to you commoners.
