We're not sure what could have prompted the wrath of Reese Witherspoon's Madeline to throw two scoops of ice cream at Meryl Streep's head on the set of Big Little Lies, but take aim she did...

And it seems that she hit her target, with Witherspoon confirming that she "got her".

Fans of the award-winning HBO series were excitedly sharing images on social media showing Witherspoon preparing to throw her ice-cream cone at Streep's character as they filmed a scene in California's Monterey.

One Twitter user wrote: "I'm praying Reese pelts Meryl with that ice cream."

The Oscar-winning star gave the best response to the tweet, writing on Instagram: "Oh Matt! No need to pray. I got her."

It was confirmed earlier this year that Streep would be joining the already-stellar cast as Mary Louise Wright, the mother-in-law of Nicole Kidman's character Celeste.

Mary Louise's son, the abusive and controlling Perry, was played by Alexander Skarsgard in series one. Skarsgard won a Golden Globe for his performance.

"Concerned for the wellbeing of her grandchildren following her son Perry’s death, Mary Louise arrives in Monterey searching for answers," HBO says of the role.

Kidman - who also won a Golden Globe for her role as Celeste - revealed back in January that Mary Louise was written specifically for Streep, but that they weren't sure if they would get her.

Witherspoon proudly announced on Instagram that they had, with Kidman adding that the entire cast want to make sure she has the best experience possible during filming.

"We're determined to give her an extraordinary experience,” Kidman said. “She's had a lot of experiences so we just want to make it fun for her and vibrant and exciting."

Big Little Lies is expected to return to HBO and Sky Atlantic in 2019.
