You've Got To See These Faux-Shearling Chairs Nate Berkus And Jeremiah Brent Designed
There are armchairs you buy because you convince yourself they're comfortable enough-and then there are ones you sink into and want to announce, "This is my home now. I live here. Please forward all mail to this very spot, because I'm never leaving." Somehow, someway, Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent's new faux-shearling Ava chair for Living Spaces hits both of these categories.
Inspired by vintage shearling chairs that can easily set you back five figures, the couple culled through the "hundreds" of reference books they had at home, trying to strike a balance between the luxe look and a comfortable design. And one that won't set you back even a tenth of what those classic designs would cost you on 1stDibs. They landed on a fabric that's 100 percent polyester, but it feels just like a lamb's wool. It's soft and nubby; the sort of thing you find yourself awkwardly stroking as you sit, which I definitely did.
Admittedly, I was skeptical of the chair at first. At $850, it's still pricier than your typical Wayfair find, and the modern lines and channeled back-a nod to the work of French designer Jean-Michel Frank-seemed to have all the hallmarks of a chic chair that looks better than it feels. Then Nate handed me a cup of coffee and Jeremiah encouraged me to actually sit down, first at the Soane sectional (also from their line), before telling me to make myself at home. The duo had reimagined the rustic rooftop bar at New York's McKittrick Hotel into a comfy hideaway, complete with a breakfast spread and a full tent to shield everyone from the surprise downpour. It was here that they were debuting their new upholstery collection, with the promise of an even greater variety of pieces coming in the spring. Given the rain, a rooftop-albeit tented-should be the LAST place I'd want to spend the morning.
And yet, 20 minutes later, I just wanted to curl up in that armchair and spend the day there, sipping coffee and watching the rain. The chair has an ultra soft, sumptuous upholstery, but what really sets it apart from other cozy chairs is that you don't sink into it to the point that it eats you alive. You're not stuck there; you choose to curl up.
Nate and Jeremiah's faux-shearling chair comes out just weeks after Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop revealed one in its collaboration with CB2. If these tastemakers are any indication, faux-shearling is about to be a huge trend in home decor.
