Applewood Farm in Scott Twp. will celebrate Saturday the grand opening of its new market at 53 Jermyn Farm Road.

The family-owned farm that raises Black Angus beef and pork will be giving out samples and hosting local vendors at the grand opening celebration, which runs from noon to 5 p.m. It will also run a hayride if weather permits and have one of its Black Angus calves on hand to meet patrons.

The market will offer for sale a number of cuts of locally raised Black Angus beef, from steaks and roasts to ground beef, as well as bacon, pork roast, pork chops, ham streaks, fresh eggs, beef and pork ribs and other offerings, said shopkeeper Allison Nogan, who also handles customer service and marketing for the farm.

Her husband Ben’s parents, Jeff and Ann Nogan, started Applewood Farm in 1984. The retail market is a relatively new addition to the family’s agriculture enterprise.

While Applewood still sells its meat in larger quantities — quarter, half or whole steer, for example — Allison Nogan said they received many requests from customers and community members looking to buy fresh local cuts in smaller amounts.

“That definitely spurred us on to invest in putting up the retail market,” she said. “We’re just really excited. We’re very hands on with our herd and we know that the community is going to love trying it.”

Following the grand opening, the market will be open Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursdays and Fridays from 4-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More information is available via the farm’s Facebook page. Prospective patrons can also call 570-445-0603 or visit applewoodfarmpa.com.
