Ariana Grande is sending a direct message to her haters with a little help from her new single.
"yes, and?" dropped promptly at midnight on Friday, Jan. 12, and underneath the hypnotic pop beats appears to lie a strong callout to those who have been hounding her and her beau, Ethan Slater, after their controversial coupling.
She suggests that she's moving on from the gossip, pointing out that "everybody’s tired and healing from somebody or something we don’t see just right" as the song opens. She later adds, "Now I’m so done with caring what you think; No, I won’t hide underneath your own projections or change my most authentic life."
Throughout the track, Grande asks, "Yes, and?" seemingly asking her critics for their point before reaching the crux of the problem as she sings, "Your business is yours and mine is mine; Why do you care so much whose...I ride?"
In case you missed it, some people care so much because the two allegedly began an affair while filming Wicked—and while Slater was still in a committed relationship with his high school sweetheart, Lilly Jay, who is also mother to his young son.
As rumors of their relationship began to swirl, Jay spoke out, calling her family "collateral damage."
"I'm focused on my son and doing my best to navigate a spotlight I have never wanted or experienced before," she said, asking for privacy to be "left alone to rebuild [her] life and raise the beautiful boy [she] gave birth to last year."
