Arnold Schwarzenegger Gets Candid On Where We Go After We Die: 'Nothing. You’re Six Feet Under'

Arnold Schwarzenegger has had an exciting couple of weeks, with the release of his new Netflix action-comedy series FUBAR on May 25 as well as his three-part limited docuseries for the streamer, Arnold, which dropped today.

Amid the press blitz for the two projects, the 75-year-old actor sat down for a chat with his old friend and costar Danny DeVito for Interview magazine, with whom he appeared alongside in the big-screen comedies Twins (1988) and Junior (1994). At one point in the wide-ranging conversation, DeVito brought up the subject of the end of mankind as we know it—as one does with their co-workers—which led to Schwarzenegger getting real on the subject of death.

In a nutshell, the so-called Governator thinks that when we die, we turn to dust.

"It reminds me of Howard Stern’s question to me. 'Tell me, governor, what happens to us when we die?'" Schwarzenegger recalled. "I said, 'Nothing. You’re six feet under. Anyone that tells you something else is a fucking liar.'"

"We don’t know what happens with the soul and all this spiritual stuff that I’m not an expert in, but I know that the body as we see each other now, we will never see each other again like that," he continued. "Except in some fantasy. When people talk about, 'I will see them again in heaven,' it sounds so good, but the reality is that we won’t see each other again after we’re gone."

"That’s the sad part. I know people feel comfortable with death, but I don’t," Schwarzenegger lamented, adding that it "truly pisses [him] off" that we all have to die one day.

Schwarzenegger's thoughts on death should hardly come as a surprise, given his feelings about aging in general. "My whole life I look at the mirror and see the best-built man, and all of a sudden I see a bunch of crap," he recently quipped in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "It’s terrible!

However, DeVito, on the other hand, was a bit more optimistic on the concept of heaven.

"All the people who are dear to us. But you keep them in this spot in your head," he explained. "To me, heaven is where I put a person who I love dearly, who is kind, who is generous, who made a difference in my life and other people’s lives. I keep them in a spot in my head, like that front row that you have of all of your friends. And you always have a good feeling when you think of them."

FUBAR and Arnold are now currently streaming on Netflix. Meanwhile, you can catch DeVito in season 16 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which also premieres on Wednesday, June 7.
