ASHEVILLE - Diners waking up with a hankering for tacos don’t have to wait until lunch or dinner to satisfy their craving.

Breakfast tacos are the answer, and some of the best can be found at the Asheville-founded restaurant, Taco Billy.

In June, Yelp released an all-time list of the best breakfast tacos from every state with Taco Billy selected to represent North Carolina.

As of July 3, Taco Billy had a 4.5 out of 5-stars rating with 453 reviews.

“I feel super honored and lucky and excited,” Owner Hunter Berry said. “It feels good to have somebody else approve of what we’re doing.”

Berry said he’s grateful for the customer support and praised the Taco Billy staff for its hard work.

Berry said a standout feature of the breakfast tacos are the fresh eggs sourced from Farside Farms in Buncombe County.

“We get about 5,000 eggs delivered a week,” Berry said.

Berry said Taco Billy’s breakfast taco portions and gluten-free, house-made plantain tortillas are other winning factors.

“What makes a breakfast taco is it’s built out of eggs, usually,” Berry said. “We sell them in the morning and at night. It’s eggs and either a protein, vegetables and cheese and served with salsa. It’s the best breakfast that I can think of.”

Taco Billy’s bestselling breakfast taco is Mama’s Favorite made with sausage, eggs, spinach, sweet potato and goat cheese served on a plantain tortilla. It costs $5.95.

Another hit is the Migas Taco made with eggs, onions, jalape?os, tomatoes, crispy-fried tortilla strips and cheddar-jack cheese. It costs $5.25.

Other signature tacos are on the menu or customers can build their own tacos. A lunch/dinner taco menu is available, too.

Berry said the restaurant offers the same menu and sources from most of the same suppliers as when it opened in 2015 because “it seems to work.”

Taco Billy’s original location is at 201 Haywood Road. In December 2022, Taco Billy expanded to 117 Cherry St. in Black Mountain.

Recently, the Live Music Fridays series kicked off on the backyard patio of the West Asheville restaurant and is intended to run through October.
