Atlanta Has a Brand-new Hotel With a Cocktail Bar Room and a Movie Room Where Guests Can Spend the Night

Located in Atlanta's growing Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, The Darwin Hotel takes a hyper-local approach to hospitality, and has a poignant mural of U.S. congressman John Lewis in the lobby.

Atlanta's hospitality scene continues to grow with a notable addition to the city's Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. The Darwin Hotel debuted on Dec. 13, just a mile east of downtown.

The 111-room, pet-friendly property stands out with a unique range of amenities, including the city's first hotel dog park and six themed suites that cater to movie, music, and book lovers. But what the hotel does best is immerse guests in local culture by offering a wide selection of classically Atlanta food, drink, artwork, clothing, and even décor.

"The Darwin Hotel brings the evolution of hospitality to Atlanta’s hotel scene," Alfonce McKinney III, the hotel's general manager, told Travel + Leisure. "We offer a personal, hyper-local Atlanta experience perfectly put together and packaged up in the efficient box of a night’s stay."

Travelers seeking unique in-room experiences can book one of the six themed suites. The Bar Room, for example, offers budding mixologists a chance to practice their hobby at a custom bar that comes with a complimentary deconstructed cocktail upon arrival. The Y'allywood Room, referring to Atlanta's popularity as a movie production hub, is the ideal getaway for cinephiles, treating them to an extra-large TV, surround sound, a popcorn machine, and movie theater lighting for the ultimate movie-inspired stay. The Audiophile Room has a record player and vinyl records; the Library Room features a custom selection of books; the Bunk Bed Room is perfect for families; and the Glam Night Out suite offers extra vanities for guests who are getting dolled up.

Welcoming guests is a chic lobby, clad in wood paneling and soaring ceilings, anchored by a mural of the late civil rights activist and U.S. congressman John Lewis, who represented Atlanta's fifth district for 17 terms.

"The inspiration behind the design was all of Atlanta, but particularly its East Side," McKinney explained. "Old Fourth Ward’s belt of rusting warehouses and chic flats; and Little Five’s inked-up urban sojourners; and The Highlands’ postage stamp–perfect bungalows and boutiques; and Ponce’s neon scene and Edgewood’s train-yard grit; this ongoing evolution all came together as inspiration for the property."

In the morning, guests can grab breakfast pastries, cold-pressed juices, and coffee — all made locally — at the hotel's lounge, which turns into a hip bar serving craft cocktails and tapas-style plates in the evenings. The property will debut a pop-up program next month highlighting dishes from various Atlanta chefs. A large courtyard with fire pits, hanging lights, and plush lounge furniture invites guests to stay all day.
