Attention: Please do not dress up your chickens for Halloween, warns CDC
It’s almost the spookiest time of the year: Halloween — the night where the dead are free to roam the earth. But what scares you the most? Zombies? Witches? Vampires? What about the debilitating and sometimes killer bacteria, salmonella?!
While it’s cute to dress up your human babies like baby chicks for Halloween, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning chicken owners not to put costumes on their live poultry for the holiday. That’s because there’s a particularly potent strain of salmonella making the rounds this year.
According to ABC News, at least 92 people in 29 states have been infected with a strain of salmonella that is resistant to multiple drugs after they were in contact with raw chicken products. While no deaths have yet been reported, 21 patients have been hospitalized.
The CDC issued a warning about handling live chickens, as they might have salmonella bacteria on their bodies. The CDC encourages chicken handlers to always wash their hands and not to let the live poultry live inside the house, especially where you keep food and beverages.
So, as entertaining as it might be, do not dress up your pet chicken up as Julia Roberts in a chick flick, or as the cruel leader Attila the Hen, and certainly not as a spooky poultry-geist.
If this type of warning is cramping your Halloween style, just remember that in 2015 the CDC had the audacity to tell people to not kiss their chickens.
