If you like a mellow tavern-like atmosphere when dining on your favorite foods, you could be ready to hit the Sack.

The Feed Sack at 1593 Whiskey Rd. in Aiken's Mitchell Shopping Center has proved so popular since its opening in the summer of 2022 that a second location opened in North Augusta in the summer of 2023.

Now you can hit The Feed Sack on Sundays, less than a month after the Aiken County restaurant’s locations announced expanded hours.

Husband-and-wife team Greg Pierce and Angelia Roberts already ran successful businesses before plunging into the restaurant business. Pierce has spent years in the wine and spirits industry, more recently helping found an area company that produces white-oak barrels used to age whiskey and other spirits. Roberts operates Augusta and Aiken locations for Savvy Home, a store selling new and consignment upscale furniture and home accessories.

Mess with the best: You've tried the rest – does this new downtown Augusta restaurant live up to its name?

The restaurant they conceived and founded pays homage to Aiken County’s legendary horse country and its deep roots in racing and breeding. Roberts’ keen eye for design is evident in the décor of dark wood and tasteful equestrian theme. Pierce’s alcohol expertise assures a robust wine selection.

The Feed Sack’s menu is filled with dishes that put a gourmet spin on even the simplest of comfort foods, such as the open-faced meatloaf sandwich with arugula, mustard remoulade, pimento cheese and Tabasco-fried onions on toasted homestyle bread.

The Feed Sack also is rolling out a summer menu with lighter but flavorful choices such as the fish tacos – marinated and grilled mahi-mahi with cabbage slaw, fire-roasted corn salsa and chipotle sour cream on grilled 6-inch flour tortillas and served with jasmine rice.

Also watch for rotating weekly specials, such as Tuesday’s Prime Rib Night, offering succulent prime rib au jus with sides of mashed potatoes, broccolini and creamy horseradish.

June 18 will be The Feed Sack’s Shadow Ridge and Bianchi Family Wine Dinner. The restaurant’s myriad wine choices are showcased as the chef presents a curated four-course meal with wine pairings.

The Feed Sack is at 1593 Whiskey Rd. in Aiken and 1069 Edgefield Rd. in North Augusta.
