Autopsy Gives New Insight Into Robert De Niro's Grandson's Overdose
New details have come to light surrounding the death of Robert De Niro's grandson, Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, who passed away at age 19 last month.
His mom, Drena, who is the adopted daughter of the iconic film star, previously shared that her son died of an overdose—but now the official autopsy report is giving a more detailed explanation of what exactly was in Leandro's system at the time of his death on July 2.
According to TMZ?, the New York City's chief medical examiner determined that Leandro died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine, and cocaine, causing his death to be ruled as an accidental overdose.
Police also confirmed that Leandro bought counterfeit oxycodone and Xanax in the days before his death, including pills that were laced with fentanyl, the outlet reports.
Leandro's mom previously spoke out about her son unknowingly purchasing pills laced with fentanyl, which she seemed to believe directly contributed to his untimely death.
"Someone sold him fentanyl laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him," Drena previously wrote in response to an Instagram comment online. "So for all these people still f---king around selling and buying this s--t, my son is gone forever ??."
Drena was the first to announce her son's death, writing via Instagram on the day he died, "My beautiful sweet angel. I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my belly. You have been my joy my heart and all that was ever pure and real in my life. I wish I was with you right now. I wish I was with you."
She continued, "I don’t know how to live without you but Ill [sic] try to go on and spread the love and light that you so made me feel in getting to be your mama."
She further praised her late son, adding, "You were so deeply loved and appreciated and I wish that love alone could have saved you ??I’m so sorry my baby, I’m so sorry @carlosmare ????. Rest in Peace and Eternal Paradise my darling boy ??????????????????????????."
Hours after his daughter broke the tragic news, the About My Father star shared his own statement about his late grandson, which read, "I'm deeply distressed by the passing of my beloved grandson Leo. We're greatly appreciative of the condolences from everyone. We ask that we please be given privacy to grieve our loss of Leo."
