There’s no getting around it: Come wintertime, you need a pair of boots. The same could likely be said of any other season, but we’ll save that argument for another time. Because when the colder, wetter, snowier months roll around, those boots are more than a stylistic choice—they’re a functional necessity.

Option abound, of course, and many of them are great. But if you’re looking for something that can brave the elements, make a showing at the office, and won’t seriously deplete your bank account, getting a pair of Blundstones is about as good a decision as you’ll make all season long.

They’re (Effectively) Weatherproof

OK, so they’re not actually waterproof. And if you want to stand around in a slush puddle for a while, your feet will eventually get wet. But if you’re just making your way through the sleet, rain, or snow and happen to accidentally wind up ankle deep in wintry mix, you’ll be fine. Trust me: I’ve done it many a time, and always emerged with dry socks.

They’re Comfortable

Like all boots, you’ve got to break ‘em in a bit. But once you’ve softened up the leather, these things are easy enough on your feet for all-day wear. It doesn’t hurt that the soles are made of thick rubber (with considerable tread to keep you upright on icy days). Just make sure they fit just a bit snug at first. Not tight, but enough to let the leather give a little without your feet slipping around inside.

They Work for Work

The thing about most foul-weather boots: They look like foul-weather boots. These guys definitely aren’t going to replace your suited-and-booted Chelseas, but they also don’t look ostentatiously functional once you step inside. They’re not the best call with a full-on suit, but try them with jeans on more casual days, and dress them up with trousers if you’re feeling up to it. We’re guessing you’ll like the results.
