Banana clip or claw clip? The controversy that shook the internet
After covering New York Fashion Week for countless seasons, I’ve grown accustomed to makeup artists and hairstylists tossing out obscure beauty references when describing runway looks. To give these individuals credit, most of their direction comes from the designers, whose out-there influences are reinterpreted into trends that get the fashion industry talking.
Well, this season, Alexander Wang has the internet buzzing over his custom-made banana clips.
In a press release, lead hairstylist and Redken global creative director Guido Palau explained the inspo behind the Wang woman’s hair this season as: “Alex Wang’s take on the ’80s power woman, when we first saw female empowerment in the office. The hair is sort of an ironic take on that power woman with the inclusion of the custom-made Alexander Wang silver banana clips. It feels young, with a slight irony to it.”
But beauty editors, style influencers, and pop culture enthusiasts swiftly took to Twitter to set the record straight on the accuracy of referring to this ’80s hair accessory as a banana clip.
A super nitpicky question: Is the thing used in the models’ hair on the Alexander Wang runway really a banana clip? As a person who wore many banana clips in the ’80s, I think it is actually a claw clip pic.twitter.com/U1pOC8LHqi

No no no. That is a HAIR CLAW, not a banana clip. A banana clip is what Geordie LaForge wore on STNG. https://t.co/VdTRQDAL1G

All these beauty editors really letting Guido get away with calling that hair clamp a banana clip. Like girl what?

According to these folks, this is not a banana clip. This is a claw clip, aka hair claw.
Behold, a banana clip.
