Bar chain cancels events offering free beer to Trump supporters: 'We care about beer and people — not hate'
The British bar chain Brewdog has pulled a series of U.K. events with an American brewery after it was claimed that Donald Trump supporters would be given free drinks.
Atlanta-based Scofflaw Brewing Co., which brands itself as “trailer trash,” sent out a marketing release about the series of launches at Brewdog bars in London.
They said tens of thousands of pounds would be put behind the bar to fund free beers for the public.
“But there’s a hook,” they wrote. “You have to be a Trump supporter.”
The release was subsequently pulled for “containing incorrect information.”
Brewdog has now canceled the events, saying the promotion was launched “without their knowledge or consent.”
“We care about beer and people,” it added in a tweet. “Not hate.”
The company responded by running its own giveaway, giving a free pint to anyone who pledged to “support love, not hate.”
“This was done without our knowledge,” a Brewdog spokesperson told Yahoo News U.K. “When we found out, we were completely blindsided.”
The event description on the Brewdog website, which has since been removed, read: “Back in the spring we welcomed one of the hottest breweries in the United States over to Ellon for a collaborative brewday — the mighty Scofflaw Brewing Company from Atlanta, Georgia.
“We had a blast with Matt and Travis so when the opportunity arose to invite the guys back over the pond for a longer stay we had to make it happen.
“So this coming week, you can catch up with Scofflaw and try their beers in our bars as they undertake a whirlwind Brewdog tour!”
Yahoo has asked Scofflaw for a comment.
