'Barbie' and 'Succession' Lead Golden Globes Nominations
The 2023 Golden Globes nominations were announced on Monday morning, and to the surprise of no one, the most buzzed-about film and TV series of the year, respectively, Barbie and Succession, led with nine nominations each.
Following close behind was Oppenheimer with eight total nominations, which famously opened on the same day as Barbie and was responsible for generating the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon. Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things likewise scored seven nods each. And of all film distributors, Netflix—with several nomination in both the film and television categories—received the most nominations at 13 total. Warner Bros. Pictures followed with 12.
This year also sees two new categories. The first, for best cinematic and box office achievement, includes films that attain "a box office receipt total/gross of $150 million, of which $100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office, and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership recognized by trusted industry sources."
Also new to the nominations this year is best performance in stand-up comedy on television. The category was features six comedians who were chosen because they gave “traditional stand-up comedy performances of at least 30 minutes, other than roles in television series, limited series, anthology series or motion pictures made for television” on “a recognized media platform." The slate of nominees include Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, and Wanda Sykes.
Another major change to the nominations and winners this year is that they were chosen not by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, but a new, racially and ethnically diverse group of voters comprised of 300 journalists from 76 countries around the world.
