Baton Rouge Zoo to reveal upcoming new entrance
BAKER, La. (BRPROUD) — The Baton Rouge Zoo has a new entrance that promises to enhance the experience for all visitors. The renovation is part of a broader effort to modernize the zoo and make it more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
The Director of the Baton Rouge Zoo Jim Fleshman said the new entrance is the beginning of a reimagined experience for visitors of all ages.
“It’s been a really complete project for us as we move towards gaining our accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” said Fleshman. “So that’s probably the impetus for this whole thing, is really to create a better facility and more for our guests.”
This upgrade is part of the zoo’s master plan, which includes new exhibits, educational programs and community events.
“It’s not just about the animals. It’s going to be about the location, the geography and the people that are found there, historically. Add some context to it so that what we’re really giving you is a snapshot in time,” said Fleshman.

The zoo aims to become a hub for wildlife education and conservation, engaging visitors with immersive experiences that connect them to nature.
Jennifer Shields oversees the zoo’s education programs which help kids of all ages.
“The goal of the youth initiatives is to build that caring for the environment for nature so that as they go through school, they’re getting the education, but they’re also getting the empathy. That’s the important part for us,” said Shields.
With these exciting changes, the Baton Rouge Zoo continues to be a cherished destination, offering both fun and learning for all who visit.
The new entrance is just the beginning of a series of enhancements designed to elevate the zoo experience for years to come.
