The Battle of Winterfell Was (Literally) Too Dark, Fans Say
Game of Thrones delivered an almighty episode as the living faced off against the dead in the Battle of Winterfell, but some people had trouble watching it.
Although episode 3 'The Long Night' received a lot of praise from viewers, it was also criticized for the low lighting.
Granted, the battle did take place at nighttime so the darkness may be a creative decision, to emphasize what it's like to be a fighter on the battlefield. But many fans said that they struggled to see what was going on, which is a bit of a problem when there are such high stakes involved.
There was no shortage of people expressing either frustration or confusion over the lighting.
"Dear Game of Thrones cinematography team," said one person on Twitter, "does the word lighting mean anything to you? Cause the audience would love to be able to SEE this epic battle."
Another viewer joked that Beric Dondarrion's "purpose in this series" has been revealed, with his flaming sword bringing some much-needed light.
It's not the first time viewers have pointed out the low lighting, either. The season premiere saw many similar complaints from fans.
On the bright side, the episode 4 trailer (don't click that link if you've yet to see the Battle of Winterfell, obviously) seems to indicate that next week's episode will have plenty of scenes set during the day.
