Battlefield 2042 didn’t have a smooth launch when it arrived last November, and things haven’t been getting much better throughout the early weeks of 2022. The game arrived hot on the heels of Halo Infinite and Call of Duty: Vanguard, both of which would have posed stiff competition even if Battlefield wasn’t marred by technical difficulties. However, EA and DICE might be working on a new plan to entice players to jump into the action – and that’s by switching to a free-to-play model.

The rumor comes from a reliable industry insider (Tom Henderson), who claims that a portion of Battlefield 2042 might be offered as a free experience. Battlefield 2042 currently consists of three main game modes – All-Out Warfare, Portal and Hazard Zone. All-Out Warfare is the typical Battlefield experience and includes the popular Conquest and Breakthrough game types. Hazard Zone is more akin to your standard battle royale, and Portal is a unique mode that lets you create custom game modes using assets from past Battlefield games.

According to Henderson, we might see Portal announced as a free-to-play experience as early as February 1st. That coincides with EA’s next earning’s call. Portal is reportedly a much more popular game mode than Hazard Zone, making it an ideal candidate to get people interested in the core Battlefield 2042 experience.

Halo Infinite used a similar tactic and found great success. Its multiplayer mode was made entirely free ahead of the release of its single-player campaign. EA must be hoping that by giving away a portion of the game, it’ll be able to pull new players into making a full purchase.
