Beachside Home Goes Contemporary
The home's weather-worn wood shingles match the beachy vibe that flows through the rest of the home. Just like the interior, the exterior of the house is built with materials that are reclaimed and natural in appearance. With stone pavers leading the way to a colorful front entrance, guests get a taste of what awaits them on the other side of the threshold.
Whitewashed Entryway
David A. Land
Splashes of purple brighten up this otherwise neutral entryway. Natural light shines through the bare windows and complements the fresh, airy style of faded wood flooring, crisp walls, cable railings, and minimal furnishings. The pared-down style lets pieces like a blackened steel credenza make a statement.
Luxury Living Room
Light bathes the living room, which features bright colors and inviting textures that leave the room feeling both chic and homey. The stone-clad fireplace is the focal point of the design, adding contrast against the white wall with its texture. It naturally draws the eye up to highlight vaulted ceilings. White poufs create extra seating and can be moved as needed—even on the back deck just outside.
Open-Concept Kitchen
An open-concept kitchen is perfect for entertaining. This room's cook station was built into the island instead of a back countertop. Its clean gray-and-white color scheme looks sleek and industrial, while wooden stools and green plants throughout bring natural themes into the design.
Coastal Dining
Natural light pours in from the windows that allow a picturesque view of the yard, inspiring a sense of zen and relaxation in this eat-in kitchen area. The tabletop is made of honed marble and was fashioned in 1956—perfect for a growing family that needs sturdy and durable furniture. The light fixture is both unique and colorful, a combination the designer favored when choosing accent furnishings.
Stunning Shelves
Reclaimed-wood shelves offset a bright white background and add warmth to the living room. Each shelf supports colorful trinkets and treasures that nod to the ocean. The balance of beige, blue, and white accessories add warmth, color, and balance to the corner reading nook.
Beachy Bedroom
This bedroom is vibrant and colorful without being childish—perfect for the young teens it was designed for. The patterned pillows and bold teal upholstered headboard are trendy yet sophisticated enough to grow with the children. Consistent with the rest of the house, the designer added natural grass cloth to the back wall to bring a natural element into the room without breaking the budget.
Playful Basement
David A. Land
This basement was designed with family time in mind. With a chalkboard-paint wall and carpet squares that are easy to remove and replace if they get stained, the nautical-theme room is primed and ready for kids to make a splash. The decor is lighthearted with a bold mix of colors that add to the lax vibe of the design. Rope brings a wave of surf spirit to a support post and staircase, where a cascade of blues brightens the risers.
World Map Wallpaper
Installing world map wallpaper pays tribute to travel and keeps the kids curious about the world around them. Snappy orange chairs play off the map's cool ocean blues, but the room is still down to earth, thanks to the white coffered ceilings and neutral cork floors, which are sound-absorbing, eco-friendly, and soft underfoot.
Creative Ways to Decorate with Maps
Warm Retreat
With its neutral beige color scheme and teal accent lamps, this primary bedroom is more evocative of a sandy beach shore than other colorful designs throughout the house. The designer added dimension to the room with a variety of textures and patterns, which turned the otherwise plain spread into a coastal classic. We love how the subtle wallpaper and carpet patterns complement each other.
Art Deco Dresser
This Art Deco chest of drawers brings a splash of color into the bedroom. Its unique brass hardware adds geometric flair, while a circular mirror offsets the sharp design.
Colorful Corner
This cozy corner adds color and flair to the children's bedroom while maintaining the beach theme. An armchair reminiscent of a beach lounger, framed ocean fragments, and a wall mirror decked out in shells create coastal appeal. Vibrant pink, orange, and yellow accents add interest to the oceany blue, white, and beige color scheme.
