Beauty Advice That Will Make You Quit FaceTune Forever

For professionals, it’s Photoshop. But in the era of Instagram selfies, apps like FaceTune and Perfect365 are copping up to help novices easily perpetuate the illusion of perfection. To combat the spotless-selfie epidemic, the hashtag #NoFacetune recently emerged, and we embraced it with gusto.
But let’s be real (no pun intended…kinda): People want to look good, so flaw-erasing apps are likely here to stay. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with looking your best! But what if you could pull off a selfie that’s on fleek without filters or digital fine-tuning? That’s closer to how you really look when you’re just made up? We turned to the pros to help us up our Insta game and say goodbye to FaceTune forever.
The Products
Most people are not blessed with perfect skin. This we know. But the right products can make it appear however you want.
Kathy Jeung, a makeup artist to the stars, recommends three types of foundation for flawless skin. For matte coverage, she picks NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint. For a full-coverage demi-matte finish, she suggests By Terry Terrybly Densiliss Wrinkle Control Foundation. And for a radiant flawless finish, she loves TOM FORD Traceless Foundation Stick.

Makeup artist Jill Harth, on the other hand, has not only formulated her very own Liquid to Powder Mineral Foundation for flawless, photo-ready skin, but she’s developed a few perfecting concealers, too. “My clients love my Dual Action Concealers, which have light diffusers that create a highlighting effect and draw all attention to your eyes. It’s great for taking pictures.”
While makeup artist Gina Brooke reveals that “RCMA Concealer is every professional makeup artist’s go-to,” she’s also a big advocate of color correctors. She says they’re the best way to camouflage blemishes, dark circles and pigment inconsistencies. “For example, green instantly removes redness, yellow counters purple and blue, salmon brightens a dull complexion, lavender eliminates yellow undertones, and peach immediately neutralizes dark circles.” Her favorite color correctors are by Urban Decay Cosmetics.
The Application
Snapping a sensational selfie is also about applying product correctly, and playing up your best features.
Brooke says the best way to enhance your features is observe your face and define the peaks and valleys. “Highlighting the peaks [high points] of your face will immediately soften and accentuate your bone structure. Contouring the valleys using warm yellow undertones will recede and re-shape your face.” For color correctors, “the key is application. Just one drop added directly to the skin and/or mixed into the foundation will conceal flaws effortlessly,” notes Brooke.

“Everyone can benefit from shading just beneath the chin and jawline,” adds Jeung. “Subtle but effective favorites that glide on smoothly” include TOM FORD Translucent Pressed Powder in Sahara Dusk and Fiona Stiles Sheer Sculpting Palette.
And don’t forget to play up your gorgeous facial features! “To get a great looking selfie, make sure you have defined eyes,” says Harth. “Use a powder liner eye pencil to line your eyes and enhance their shape. Add a coat or two of volumizing mascara to further define your eyes.” Finish off your look with pop of blush on your cheekbones and some luscious lip gloss.
What to Avoid
In your quest for a FaceTune-free selfie, full-coverage foundations may seem like the obvious answer, but Harth warns against laying it on too thick. “Use a foundation brush to apply and blend the foundation in downward strokes. Blend, blend, blend! And don’t forget your neck and into the hairline, too.”
Jeung strongly advises against colored powders. A light dusting of no-color translucent powder is the way to go, she says.
And Brooke is adamant about what sabotages selfies most. “By all means, avoid overhead lighting. [It] will instantly enhance fine lines and wrinkles as well as highlight any imperfections.” Mariah Carey agrees, so you know it’s true.
