Bella Thorne calls out hurtful comments about her provocative outfits
As a former child star who has been acting since 2003, Bella Thorne is long used to the spotlight. But that doesn’t mean the 20-year-old actress and singer is immune to getting hurt by harsh comments — particularly when they involve derogatory and sexist assumptions based on her clothing choices.
The onetime Disney star’s eclectic style frequently includes bustiers, bikinis, and crop tops. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Midnight Sun actress said her sometimes revealing outfits often prompt slut-shaming comments that can really sting.
In describing what’s most hurtful, Thorne said, “When people look at you and they’re like, ‘Oh, [you’re] dressing a certain way. You have to be covered up or else you’re a slut of some sort,’ or whatever they want to call you,” she said. “Whatever demeaning term they think fits you best.”
Thorne said she’s also judged by the public regarding her admission that she was sexually abused at age 14.
“If someone says, like, ‘Why do you dress that way? Is it because something that happened when you were younger?’” she said of some critiques. “And you’re like, ‘Oh, maybe it actually is. Hmm, that’s a good point.’ You know, it’s like kind of those small moments where you’re like, ‘Oof, I wish that didn’t dig as deep as it did.’”

This image, for instance, drew comments like “get some clothes on” and “thot,” which is slang for a promiscuous woman.
For now, Thorne — who is busy working on her own beauty brand — will wear what she likes. The trolls will just have to deal.
