Ben Affleck Reveals Big Financial Misstep He and Matt Damon Took After Selling 'Good Will Hunting'

The actor recalled thinking he was 'rich for life' after selling the movie's script.

Ben Affleck isn't holding back on confessing his early-career financial mistakes.

While on The Drew Barrymore Show, Affleck revealed that when he and Matt Damon sold the script for Good Will Hunting, the friends operated out of the same bank account—and the two of them quickly blew through the money they earned.

"We did share a bank account and I always thought it was perfectly normal. We wanted to be actors and we were in Boston, we wanted to go to New York, take the train up to New York and pay for that to go audition because that's where you could audition," he explained.

The actor said he and Damon would put the money they earned from their respective acting gigs into the account, but their big financial break didn't come until Castle Rock Entertainment bought their script.

"When we sold Good Will Hunting, I was like, 'We are now rich for life. My needs are over. I will never have to work again,'" recalled Affleck. The movie was sold for $600,000 and was split evenly between the best friends. However, Affleck explained that their agents got $30,000, and then $150,000 went into taxes.

That didn't leave them with much money. The pair decided that they'd use what was left to purchase themselves each a Jeep Cherokee, and then rent a "party house" by the Hollywood Bowl. "We went broke in six months," the actor admitted.

Affleck also recently spoke about sharing a home with Damon during the early days of their careers, telling James Corden that his best friend was difficult to live with.
