How to Make the Best-Ever Blackberry Cobbler, According to Jennifer Garner’s Mom

More recently, she's charmed us with her wholesome, heartwarming social media posts, some of which focus on cooking. Her Pretend Cooking Show series is one we'll always make time for when we see it come across our feed. Over the years, we’ve seen Garner collaborate with the likes of her hero Ina Garten, and now it's time for Pat Garner, Jenn's charming mom, to share in some of the kitchen spotlight.
On a recent episode of the Today Show, Garner and her mother Pat pay tribute to their late neighbor Mrs. Lantz by making her recipe for blackberry cobbler. Garner mentions that she always refers to Mrs. Lantz as her “bonus mom,” which is part of what makes this recipe so special. The other part is Mrs. Lantz’s use of a secret ingredient that ensures the best blackberry crumble you’ve ever tasted: almond extract.

How to Make Jennifer Garner's Blackberry Cobbler
As we've mentioned, this is actually Jennifer Garner's mom's friend's cobbler recipe, but it's become a staple in Jenn's kitchen too. In addition to having a connection to someone who was important in their lives, this recipe is incredibly simple and super delicious. Win win win!
We suggest checking out the Instagram slide that shows the handwritten recipe because it's super charming, but the recipe is almost easy enough to memorize. Start by rinsing 3 cups of blackberries. Add those to a large buttered baking dish and sprinkle with lemon juice and a dash of almond extract.
The extract doesn't taste all that much like almonds, but it adds an aromatic sweetness to the cobbler and really enhances the flavor of the fruit. Like most extracts, almond extract is very concentrated, so a little bit goes a long way. The recipe calls for 1/4 teaspoon, which is a very small amount but also the perfect amount. Any more and there's a chance that the flavor could take over.
Next up, the topping. All you need to do is sift flour, sugar and salt into a large bowl, then stir in one beaten egg until you have a shaggy mixture. Spoon the topping evenly over the fruit then drizzle with 6 tablespoons of melted butter (or, if you want to be like Mrs. Lentz, you can use margarine).
Bake at 375° until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling vigorously, which should take about 25 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream (not negotiable). If you can, make this with your mom or at least for her. We think Jenn would approve of that!
