Who has the best french fries in Holland? Locals crown HopCat

HOLLAND — Hollanders gave their "tots" on the matter, and the best local french fries have been crowned.

We asked locals to vote between 15 nominees on National French Fry Day. HopCat, located at 80 W. Eighth St. in downtown Holland, was voted No. 1 among sit-down and fast-food restaurants in The Sentinel's online poll.

HopCat opened downtown in April 2019. The restaurant has 11 locations, according to its website, including in Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo. The eatery is perhaps best known for its "cosmik fries" (until recently known as "crack fries") — beer battered sticks of deliciousness sprinkled with signature cracked black pepper seasoning.

HopCat took home 25.8% of the vote, followed by runner-up Hops at 84 East, also in downtown Holland, with 12.15% of the vote. Hops at 84 East serves house-cut fries alongside brick oven pizza, burgers and baked spaghetti pie.

In third place was Frank's Restaurant at 134 E. Main Ave. in Zeeland, with 11.51% of the vote. Frank's has been around for a century, serving up good ol' fashioned burgers and fries (and breakfast, if you're an early bird).

Other nominees were Culver's (9.17%), Goog's (8.53%), Kozak's (6.82%), Beechwood Grill (5.97%), Crazy Horse (4.69%), Checkers (3.62%), Wing Stop (3.2%), Bowerman's on Eighth (2.56%), Dune Dogz (2.56%), Waverly Stone (1.71%), Holy Smokers BBQ (1.07%) and Hardee's (0.64%).
