This is the best hotel resort in SC for 2024, Travel+Leisure says. Here’s why it’s so great

Hotel Hartness in Greenville County has been named the best resort in South Carolina by readers of Travel + Leisure a year after opening.

The hotel, on 449 acres about 10 miles outside downtown Greenville, is on the site of the home of the Pat Hartness family.

Hartness’ father, Tom, bought a Pepsi-Cola bottling plant in the 1940s and then proceeded to turn bottling on its head with 100 patents improving the process.

Pat Hartness followed his father as chief executive officer. The family sold Hartness International, which manufactures packaging equipment, to Illinois Tool Works in 2009, the year Tom Hartness died at 90.

Pat Hartness, along with sons Sean and David, entertained offers to develop the homestead but decided to do it themselves.

Besides the hotel, there is a residential community, a village and acres of pastures, woods and lakes.

The hotel has 73 rooms, restaurants The Captain and Patterson Kitchen + Bar, a spa called Spa H, a farm, a 180-acre nature preserve, and a private grass runway turned event lawn.

Pat Hartness’ former home, a mid-century manor house built in the 1980s, was incorporated in the design.

Travel + Leisure readers described the hotel as “modern and beautiful, yet warm and welcoming.”
