Mauritius, with its miles of beautiful white-sand beaches backed by lush forests and dramatic volcanic peaks, is made for romance, with some of the most romantic hotels in the Indian Ocean. Private plunge pools, butlers and helicopter transfers are on offer, along with some of the best gourmet restaurants in the region and top-notch spas. There’s also plenty to do and see away from the beach, from visiting colourful markets and exploring temples to riding the longest zip-line in the world or joining a tandem skydive – all in a space the size of Surrey. Perhaps best of all, romance here is affordable – Mauritius has some of the best-value deals in the region. Here's our pick of the best hotels in Mauritius for couples.

This calm, discreet and secluded six-star hideaway oozes luxury, with suites and thatched villas spread across hectares of tropical greenery. Some have direct access to the beach, and yet others, as big as houses, sit on stilts above the mangroves. The infinity pool is one of the loveliest on the island, with cabanas big enough for two. Guest comfort is a priority, and with almost two staff per guest, pampering is guaranteed. The Princely Villa is one of the island's most private, with its own beach, two pools, three terraces and round-the-clock butler.

With the whole island to choose from, this resort settled for the best spot – a sheltered sandspit on the glam northeast with over a mile of white-sand beaches and 60 acres of gardens. It has the best boathouse on the island, on a calm lagoon, three infinity pools (one adults-only) and Club One, which has state-of-the-art fitness facilities, classes and tennis courts. Parisian Brigitte Baranés was looking for a home, but fell in love with this boutique hotel perched beside an untamed beach. A unique option for couples wanting to spend a night or two away in a bubble lodge on the small island of Ile aux Cerfs. The only way to get here is by boat and there are just three Bubble Lodges on the island – two by the beach and one in the centre of an ancient Banyan tree – meaning that once the last golfer has been ferried back to the mainland at 8pm (the island is home to an 18-hole course), you have the place almost entirely to yourself. The service here could not feel more exclusive. Each lodge is assigned its own private butler. Your only alarm is birdsong.
