An insider's guide to the best hotels near Tenerife South Airport, including the best places to stay for lavish suites, spectacular pools, relaxing spas, and excellent restaurants, in locations including Costa Adeje, Playa de la Americas and Los Cristianos.

The Sensimar Arona Gran fuses contemporary luxury with sub-tropical verdure, a blend that works surprisingly well. Uncluttered elegance and soft, muted earth tones make the guest rooms tranquil and restful spaces where the emphasis is on quality of materials. Three heated swimming pools are set within extensive sub-tropical gardens, sunbathing terraces and decking areas overlooking the bay of Los Cristianos. The hotel will arrange free airport transfers for stays of seven days or more. Otherwise a taxi takes 20 minutes and cost around €34 (£29). You can also take the 111 bus, which runs every 30 minutes.

This is very much a family-oriented resort. It's contemporary colonial in style, with a strong use of Astro Turf around the swimming pools and on balconies to reflect the greens of the golf course alongside, and there are lots of other pleasing design features like wrought iron gazebos, a funky chill-out bar, and the occasional model of a crocodile hidden among the tropical plantings. The hotel will arrange taxi transfers if required: the drive is around 30 minutes and costs about €37 (£32). Guests can also jump on the 111 bus, but will need a taxi from the bus station so it's not really worth it.

A favourite with celebrities, deluxe, romantic and gastronomic paradise of a hotel, set within the heart of Playa de Las Américas, is luxury in the old-fashioned sense of the word. It offers superb service, beautiful surroundings, and top-notch dining in extravagant, Mexican hacienda style. Extensive, immaculately maintained grounds include tennis courts and a large swimming pool with mock cliff and cascading waterfalls. Plush sun loungers with fat, lilac mattresses and copious Bali beds are scattered around the pool, gardens and upper terrace overlooking the beach. The 111 bus is a slightly more feasible option for this hotel, while a taxi from the airport takes 25/30 minutes and costs around €37 (£32).

Occupying a prime seafront location in Costa Adeje, the Jardín Tropical is a four-star hotel with five-star looks: an attractive blend of colonial and North African, with cream-coloured turrets, hidden corners, waterfalls and walkways. There is a high standard of dining, and facilities include botanical gardens and sexy swimming pools – including one carved into the rock at the cliff-top Beach Club. There are 390 rooms with garden or sea views and a private balcony or terrace. The hotel is a 30-minute drive from the airport, so a taxi will set you back by about €39 (£34). It is a 10-minute walk from the 111 bus stop.

Popular with British holidaymakers, Sandos San Blas Nature Resort & Golf is a stylish, all-inclusive five-star hotel set in a quiet location within easy distance of golf courses, offering a tranquil retreat for nature and activity lovers. Rooms are spacious and are beautifully designed, featuring wood, glass and fabrics. A contemporary screen in earthy tones covers one wall above the bed; soft furnishings are warm tangerine, green and sienna, while furniture is chunky, dark wood. Practically on the airport's doorstep, a taxi transfer takes 10 minutes and costs under €20 (£17).
