The Best Kids Songs of 2020 on Spotify Included Lots of Soundtrack Hits
Spotify Kids announced the most popular kids' music of 2020.
Songs from Disney movie soundtracks dominate the list, but the most streamed song was from Tones and I.
KIDZ BOP Kids, Dove Cameron and JoJo Siwa were the top artists.
You know you're a parent when you check out the Spotify Wrapped list of your most listened to songs and artists and ... it's basically the soundtrack to Frozen 2 in order. With maybe a track or two from Moana thrown in for good measure.
While the rest of the world was streaming Bad Bunny, The Weeknd and brain-nourishing Ted Talks, parents were throwing on songs from Trolls: World Tour — again — so their kids can get their wiggles out. (Maybe even long enough for parents to do the dishes. Please?)
So, to the parents out there, we say: We see you. If the regular Spotify Wrapped lists felt surprised you, it's okay. Spotify Kids has just released the results of its most listened to music for families in 2020, and maybe these look a little more familiar.
While the No. 1 streamed song on Spotify was The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights," the song that earned the top spot on the kids' app is "Dance Monkey" by Tones and I. It makes sense: The song has all the classic hallmarks of a catchy kids' earworm. The "dance for me, dance for me, dance for me" refrain is easy enough for kids to remember, and gives them clear-cut directions. Plus, obviously, it's a kids' dance song, so they can move to it. In a year when many of us were stuck inside our houses obeying stay-at-home orders, when you need to burn off a little kid energy, a living-room dance party is sometimes just what you need. And this song, by its very nature, is an instant dance party.
Besides Tones and I, the most streamed Spotify Kids songs are from soundtracks — and, as you can probably guess, they're mostly Disney songs. This includes "Into the Unknown" from Frozen 2, “Flesh & Bone” from Zombies 2, “Like the Zombies Do” from Zombies 2, “Good to Be Bad” from Descendants 3 and “The Other Side" from Trolls World Tour. So, basically, everybody has been spending a lot of time with their Disney+ streaming services this quarantine.
Speaking of The Descendants, if there's one breakout star of the movie series, at least in the Spotify Kids world, it's Dove Cameron, who plays Mal, the daughter of Maleficient. Cameron is one of the app's top streaming artists on her own. (My daughter is a huge fan of "Born Ready," from a different Disney-owned franchise, the Marvel Rising series.) Besides Dove Cameron, Spotify Kids reports the top-played artists are KIDZ BOP Kids (which has its own version of "Blinding Lights") and JoJo Siwa. If you're a parent, none of this comes as a surprise.
And then there are those who don't use Spotify Kids for music. Parents who needed an easy, read-aloud storytime on demanded turned to the Captain Underpants series, LEGO Ninjago stories and Peter Pan. It definitely works in a pinch, when library read-alouds are closed and you need to get some work done.
