Inspired by vintage dockside styles of the '50s and '60s, they feature a cuffed and tacked leg opening and single front pleat, making them effortlessly stylish and casual with an elegant touch. Made from durable 100-percent cotton, these shorts are pigment-dyed and stone-washed, giving them a worn-in look and feel.
The herringbone pattern adds visual texture, and the 8-inch inseam is flattering for most, making them versatile enough for formal summer events and casual outings. The front slash pockets offer easy access, and there are two back button-through welt pockets, one with a pocket flap to keep your wallet secure. Pair them with sneakers or loafers for easy-wearing style all summer long.

What to Look for When Choosing the Best Shorts for Men
There's no one-size-fits-all when choosing the best shorts. The shorts I wear daily vary significantly from those I wear when running, but I found the shorts above to be the best in their respective activities. While all were selected with style in mind, there are some key considerations when choosing the best shorts for you.
Material
Cotton is the most common and versatile choice for lifestyle shorts. Whether dress shorts, khaki shorts, or lounging shorts, cotton is breathable and can be dressed up or down. Linen is also popular in the summer; it breathes well and offers a cool, unfussy appearance. The only downside is it wrinkles easily, but summer is about ease, right?
You typically find nylon or polyester blends for running or travel shorts. These fabrics incorporate stretch, and are lightweight, breathable, and easy to clean. They keep the wearer comfortable and cool during exercise. Athletic shorts may also feature an elastic waistband and built-in liner to prevent chafing.
Inseam
The most popular inseam for men’s shorts ranges from 7 to 9 inches. Depending on your height and whether you prefer them longer or shorter, you should choose an inseam that makes you feel comfortable.
The ideal and most versatile short length should hit right at the top or middle of your knee. Some guys prefer shorter shorts, even in the 6-inch range.
Conversely, shorts that are too long can look sloppy and juvenile. For guys of average height and under, inseams between 7 to 8 inches are optimal as they hit above the knee but not so short that they look like trunks. Taller guys might decide to opt for inseams between 8 or 9 inches for a more balanced look.
Pockets
Pockets vary based on their intended purpose. For a night out, khaki shorts with two side pockets and one back pocket will suffice and provide a tailored appearance, similar to a pair of chinos.
For hiking, look for side pockets to hold your phone, tools, and various accouterments, while for running, look for at least one zippered pocket to hold your keys and minimize extra fabric.
For commuting or travel, look for zippered pockets to protect key belongings like your wallet, phone, or keys. With the appropriate pockets for your needs, you'll ensure functionality and convenience whether you're heading out for the evening, hitting the trails, or traveling.
Taper
Except for athletic varieties like running or hiking shorts, you want your shorts to have a slight taper before they hit your knee, as it gives a more put-together and stylish appearance. When shorts have a slight taper, they're more refined and can be worn with anything from a t-shirt to a polo shirt or collared shirt.
Performance vs. Casual vs. Dress Shorts
Dress, casual, and athletic shorts each serve distinct purposes and feature different designs.
Dress shorts are typically made from fabrics like cotton or linen and have a tailored fit, often including features like belt loops, button closures, and minimal pockets to maintain a sleek, polished appearance suitable for semi-formal occasions.
Casual shorts offer versatility and comfort and are usually crafted from breathable materials like cotton or linen. They may include multiple pockets, relaxed-yet-tapered fits, and adjustable waistbands, making them ideal for everyday wear and laid-back activities.
Performance or athletic shorts prioritize comfort and functionality. They're often made from lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics—such as polyester or nylon—and may feature elastic waistbands, built-in liners, and minimal pockets to enhance movement and comfort during physical activities like running or working out.
Why You Should Trust Us
In addition to writing for Men's Journal, I've covered topics ranging from menswear, fragrances, watches, grooming, and styling for InsideHook, Robb Report, Esquire, and Men's Health. I served as the market editor at Esquire for several years, scouring the industry for the best garments and goods that were not only worth the investment but also made for compelling stories and good advice for readers.
Although I've worked in menswear for most of my career, I was allergic to wearing shorts for much of it. Even on the hottest summer days, you'd find me in blue jeans or breathable chinos. The only times I saw fit to wear trousers’ shorter siblings were by a body of water or while exercising. Over the past several years, though, I've done a complete 180. As with many things in life, we grow, evolve, and learn to embrace items (or sometimes reject) garments that we once didn't wear.
Now, I wear shorts every spring and summer, from everyday lifestyle shorts to hiking upstate, running, or enjoying a seaside town night out. I love pairing retro socks with sneakers when I wear garment-dyed khaki shorts. I also enjoy wearing athletic cotton shorts on lazy Sundays.
