From Town & Country

Our column "The Best Room At" offers a glimpse inside some of the most charming, luxurious, and iconic properties around the world.

One of the crown jewels in the extensive JW Marriott collection, is their Venice property, just a 15-minute boat ride from St. Marks Square, but is like stepping into a magical Italian dreamworld. Think: lush gardens, one of the most dramatic entrances in a city built on drama, and rooftops views of the Venice skyline. Angelo Vignola, Director of Sales and Marketing, talks to T&C about their best room—The Rose Villa—and what the hotel is doing to help Venice stay afloat (literally).

What do you consider "the best" room at The JW Marriott Venice? Why?

The room I consider “the best” at the JW Marriott Venice is the Villa Rose. The Villa Rose is a private villa with a swimming pool and is entirely secluded within our gardens. The first floor has views over the lagoon towards the Venice skyline. The interiors were done by Matteo Thun, renowned Italian architect and designer, and are flooded with sunlight and air, merging with the surrounding nature. On the ground floor there is an extensive living area with a dining room and a separate kitchen. This is a large private home which can be configured for up to seven guests.

Wellness is such a hospitality buzzword these days. What is Marriott's unique take on the idea of wellness?

In today’s world of constant multi-tasking and digital overload, we yearn to pause, take a breath and focus on what matters most. Our guests want to be fully present, take in the moment and re-connect, so we create environments and experiences that foster togetherness and leave our guests feeling nurtured and with a deep sense that “all is well.” During our annual Gather By JW festival this past September, we created meaningful experiences for our guests to be present and to enrich the body, mind and spirit. At the heart of Gather by JW’s Festival Square, JW Marriott created an outdoor JW Mindfulness House and an indoor quiet space, dubbed The Hideaway. At the JW Mindfulness House, guests experienced a sampling of well-being offerings by Alo and others, blended their own curated tonics at The Elements Adaptogen Bar, and arranged for bicycles to explore the natural beauty of Isola delle Rose.

In September, the property hosted a major food festival called Gather by JW that brought together some of the top chefs, from Giada to Angela Hartnett, in the world. What was the inspiration for the event?

Gather by JW was designed to offer experiences that allow our guests to explore the connection between food and well-being. JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa’s culinary legacy and secluded location on a private island in Venice made this property the perfect place to bring this event to life.

How is Marriott, one of the largest hotel brands in the world, thinking about over-tourism in Venice and the effect on the city's infrastructure and natural environment? How does the Marriott help promote responsible tourism in Venice?

In an effort to combat some of the negative effects of over-tourism, JW Marriott has put a major focus on mindfulness and sustainability initiatives. JW Marriott is committed to practicing sustainable farming by creating JW Gardens at each property filled with seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs that are incorporated into our food and beverage offerings. The beautifully manicured gardens at JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa include groves of olive trees that are used to create our own home grown olive oil, as well as organic vegetable and herb gardens that provide ingredients used at each of our hotel restaurants. JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa is located on a private island, so guests traveling to the resort are avoiding over-populated areas and encouraged to take part in the various well-being activities offered on property. JW Marriott is deeply committed to environmental initiatives and understanding the impact on the world around us.
