It hasn't been a very snowy winter yet, but the slopes are open at two Arizona ski resorts. Both ski areas have snow-making capability.

Arizona Snowbowl, the ski resort in the San Francisco Peaks north of Flagstaff, opened for the 2023-24 season on Nov. 17.

Sunrise Park Resort, on the Fort Apache Reservation in the White Mountains about 220 miles east of central Phoenix, began making snow on Oct. 29 and opened on Dec. 1.

Opening day: Sunrise Park Resort opened Friday, Dec. 1. As of mid-December, the base snow depth was 19 inches and six of 67 trails were open.

New for 2024: Here's what guests will notice this season:

  • Upgrades to the lifts, most notably an overhaul of the Sunrise Express lift that improved its control systems, electronics and safety sensors.

  • Radio-frequency identification passes that can be ordered in advance online or at automated kiosks called Skiosks.

  • Upgrades to the snowmaking equipment and a new water pump system that doubled the resort's water capacity to improve the quality of its artificial snow.

  • Guests can ski at night during three periods: through the Christmas and New Year's holidays, Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend in January and Presidents Day weekend in February.

Lift tickets: Price varies by age, date and type of ticket, for half-day or full-day admission. Weekend and holiday admission cost more than weekday admission. Tickets cost more if you book closer to the day you plan to visit. Prices for 2023-24 day passes start at $73 for most adults ($68 for half-day passes); check the resort's website for more information. Season passes are available.
