Bet You Didn't Realize Steven Tyler Had a Son

To most of the world, Steven Tyler is the caterwauling, scarf-wearing lead singer of Aerosmith, but to four people, he’s just dad. The rock icon—who has been called the Demon of Screamin’—became a parent in 1977 with the arrival of daughter Liv, whom he shares with ex Bebe Buell.
Initially, though, Tyler didn’t know he was a father. Buell, who was concerned about Tyler’s drug usage, at first said her then-boyfriend, Todd Rundgren, was Liv’s father. Liv wouldn’t find out that Tyler was her biological dad for several years. (Rundgren is legally her adoptive father.)
"I have more empathy for my parents now," Liv explained to The Daily Telegraph in 2008. "As a child I didn't understand why that would happen—how that could happen. Everybody had a different interpretation [of the situation] and how they participated. And you know what—I'm OK with that. All that matters is whatever kind of relationship I can have with them now."
Tyler, for his part, entered rehab for the first time in the 1980s. While he’s relapsed several times since then, he’s been open about how pursuing sobriety was important for his relationships with his kids. “The band is still together and still sought-after,” he told GQ in 2019. “And that’s what’s at risk if I use again. And my kids. My cats. My dogs. My beautiful f–king house in Maui. My girlfriend. Everything is at risk.”

Steven Tyler became a father in 1977 when he welcomed daughter Liv with Bebe Buell. Buell, a model and Playboy Playmate of the Month, only dated Tyler for a brief period before she became pregnant. Buell initially said that her off-and-on boyfriend Todd Rundgren was Liv’s father, in part because Tyler was struggling with drug addiction. Liv didn’t find out Tyler was her father until she was around 9.
“Strangely enough, when I first met my dad, I didn’t know he was my dad and I fell in love with him. I put his poster on my wall,” Liv recalled to Interview magazine in 1997. “My mom has a diary entry or something where I wrote, ‘I think Steven is my father.’ I had the same feelings for Todd. I would go to sleep at night and wake up at, like, 6 in the morning and creep up the little steps to the tower where he would be on his computer. I would just sit there.”
After Buell introduced Liv to her biological father, they slowly started developing a deeper relationship. “After we met, he, Steven, started calling and we’d go see him,” Liv told Wonderland in 2011. “He was just out of rehab, so part of going through those steps is making amends by reaching out to my mom after years of being a drug addict and not ever being there. He’d never met me before.”
Cyrinda Foxe
After his split from Bebe Buell, Steven Tyler married model Cyrinda Foxe, who was previously married to New York Dolls frontman David Johansen. Foxe and Tyler welcomed daughter Mia in 1978, the same year they tied the knot. The couple divorced in 1987, and Foxe later published a memoir titled Dream On: Livin' on the Edge with Steven Tyler and Aerosmith. In 2002, Foxe died of a brain tumor at age 50.
Teresa Barrick
Following his divorce from Cyrinda Foxe, Steven Tyler married Teresa Barrick in 1989. The pair welcomed daughter Chelsea in 1989 and son Taj in 1991. The former couple announced their separation in 2005 and finalized their divorce the following year.

Liv Tyler is the only child of Steven Tyler and Bebe Buell. Liv didn’t know Steven was her father for the first decade of her life, believing instead that her mom’s then-boyfriend, Todd Rundgren, was her dad. She started acting as a teenager, appearing in movies including Empire Records, That Thing You Do! and Inventing the Abbotts. (On the set of Empire Records, her co-star Coyote Shivers technically served as her guardian—he was married to Buell at the time.)
In 2001, Liv reached a new level of fame when she played Elven princess Arwen in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. She has since starred in Ad Astra, 9-1-1: Lone Star, The Leftovers and Harlots. In 2024, she is set to reprise her Incredible Hulk role, Betty Ross, in Captain America: Brave New World.

After Mia’s birth, her dad commemorated her birth with the song “Mia,” which appeared on Aerosmith’s 1979 album, Night in the Ruts. As an adult, Mia worked as a model and actress, starring in Rush Hour 3 and the reality show Pretty Wicked. Mia shares son Axton, born in 2017, with ex Dan Halen.

Steven Tyler’s youngest daughter, Chelsea, was born in 1989. Chelsea followed in her dad’s musical footsteps, forming the band Kaneholler with her now-husband, Jon Foster, in 2011. Steven Tyler’s youngest child and only son, Taj, is the only one of his kids who uses Tyler’s given last name, Tallarico. Taj is the most private of Tyler’s children and largely stays out of the public eye. In 2002, he appeared alongside his dad and sister Chelsea in one episode of Lizzie McGuire. Taj married Brittany Reardon in 2018.
