Beyoncé Kicked Off the Oscars with a Neon Extravaganza (& We Wouldn't Have it Any Other Way)

2 min read

Beyoncé received her first-ever Oscar nomination this year, for her original song, “Be Alive,” from King Richard. And while each of the tracks nominated for Best Original Song are performed throughout the Oscars ceremony, the “Crazy in Love” singer had the pleasure of kicking off the show...and it was a spectacle we won't be forgetting any time soon.

In typical Queen Bey fashion, she stole the show with an off-set number that was filmed in Compton, California (which is where King Richard takes place). The Destiny's Child alum was surrounded by a collection of dancers, as well as the two actresses who played Serena and Venus Williams in the Best Picture nom—Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton.

For the performance (which can be viewed here), the group served serious fashion (sorry, we had to) in neon yellow ensembles, perfectly matching the shade of tennis balls (and yes, we thought tennis balls were green, but Google says otherwise). Beyoncé was seen in a David Koma design, which was styled by Marni Senofonte. The sparkly ensemble included feathers along the neckline and long opera gloves. Meanwhile, the skirt was cut with a large slit, which allowed the singer to show off a dazzling silver garter.

It's also worth noting that this was the first time in 5 years that Beyoncé has performed at an award show. The last time we saw the 40-year-old take an award show stage was back in 2017, when she performed “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles” from her album Lemonade at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.

And she certainly made it count. If Beyoncé takes home the prize for Best Original Song, it will be her first Academy Award win. Until the prize is announced, we'll be rewatching this iconic performance.
